Following a public interest litigation, the Calcutta High Court has asked civic agencies like KMC, HMC, PWD, and KMDA to submit a full report within five weeks on Kolkata’s deteriorating road safety. Citizens welcome the move as a step toward long-term solutions.
News Desk Report | Veritas Times |Kolkata, Thursday:
Taking serious note of the deteriorating condition of Kolkata’s roads and recurring safety hazards, the Calcutta High Court has sought a comprehensive report from multiple civic and state agencies within five weeks.
The directive comes in response to a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) highlighting how major city roads and flyovers across Kolkata and Howrah have become unsafe due to potholes, broken surfaces, and poor drainage systems.
Agencies named in the court order include the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC), Howrah Municipal Corporation (HMC), Public Works Department (PWD), and the Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority (KMDA). The Bench remarked
“This is not a matter of temporary inconvenience; it concerns public safety, civic accountability, and the fundamental right to move safely.”
The PIL further criticized the authorities for resorting to temporary patchwork repairs, especially before monsoons, instead of implementing a structured maintenance plan.
The High Court has fixed the matter for hearing after the reports are filed, signaling possible policy-level intervention to ensure long-term road safety and urban planning reforms.
Civic activists and commuters have welcomed the order, calling it a “much-needed judicial push” toward restoring safety and order on Kolkata’s streets.
